There are times when creating colors for your web or other design projects may have you seeing red. For those times when you need design inspiration or for those times when you want to create and test out various color palettes without leaving the comfort of the web, Adobe has created something great for you to use.
Kuler, a color theme generator from the wonderful world of Adobe, allows you to create color themes online, rate the color themes created by other people, save those themes, port those themes over to Adobe PhotoShop (using Adobe Swatch Exchange files) and generate color themes from images!
For those new to Kuler, themes are groups of colors that you can use as a color reference for your projects. The color themes have five colors to the group and can be created with a number of variations. The colors for a theme can set up so that they are analogous, monochromatic, in triad form, complementary, compound, shades or completely custom made. Here is a look at the interface for creating a theme.

The sliders under each color swatch move left and right and allow you to change the colors. As you change individual colors, the other colors change in relation to the color you changed based on the color relationship you set up.
The colors values for each color in the theme are generated in the following formats:
- HSV
- RGB
- CMYK
- LAB
- HEX
After you set up your theme you can share it with others, download it as an Adobe Swatch Exchange File or mark it as private so others can ‘t see it. This tool is really useful. If you have a base color that you need to build a project around, you can take that color, manually enter it into the Kuler system as a base color and then the system will generate other colors based on the settings you designate (analogous, monochromatic, triad, complementary, compound, shades, custom). This will not only save you time, it will also allow you to create beautiful colors for your projects at any time quickly and easily. If you have a project you are working on that includes an existing photo, you can even take that photo, create a color theme from it using Kuler and port the result over to PhotoShop.
To use Kuler you need to create a free account. It’s quick, easy and simple.
